Manfred Niekisch

Manfred Niekisch (born July 14, 1951 in Nuremberg ) is a German biologist and expert on international nature conservation . Between March 2008 and the end of 2017 he was director of the Frankfurt Zoo .

Life

Manfred Niekisch studied biology at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate from the University of Bonn to Dr. rer. nat. with studies on the colonization strategy of the yellow-bellied toad Bombina v. variegata Linnaeus, 1758 (Anura, Amphibia) . From 1983 to 1989 he was director of the species protection center / TRAFFIC Germany of the environmental foundation WWF Germany , then until 1998 scientific director of the tropical forest foundation OroVerde. From 1998 to 2008 he held the professorship “International Nature Conservation” at the University of Greifswald , the only professorship of this kind in German-speaking countries. From March 2008 until his retirement at the end of 2017, he was in charge of the Frankfurt Zoo . Since 2010, Niekisch has held the professorship for international nature conservation at the Institute for Ecology, Evolution and Diversity at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

At the Universities of Marburg , Hanoi / Vietnam, at the University of Applied Sciences in Göttingen and at the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía in Seville, he has been teaching positions on international nature conservation. The scientific content of his work lies particularly in strategies and instruments for the sustainable use of natural resources, especially for the protection of biological diversity . This also includes the international conventions relevant to nature conservation. Niekisch is the author of numerous publications and co-editor of the Journal for Nature Conservation . He has conducted research in numerous countries around the world, with a focus on Vietnam and the countries of Latin America .

Niekisch's private library contains more than 12,000 specialist books, primarily on the subjects of ornithology and herpetology as well as on his specialty Tierra del Fuego .

Volunteering

Manfred Niekisch works on a voluntary basis in numerous functions, including President of the Society for Tropical Ecology (gtö), Vice President of the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), Vice President of the Foundation "Help for Endangered Wildlife", Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tropical Forest Foundation OroVerde and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bruno H. Schubert Foundation. He is a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the IUCN ( International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ) as well as the Comité Científico of Fundación Natura and honorary member of the Fundación Humedales (both Colombia) as well of the Advisory Board of the Global Nature Fund . He is also International Advisor of the Council for Research and Exploration of the National Geographic . For 17 years he was also the first vice-president of the German Nature Conservation Association. In 2004 he was re-elected to the Council of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN at the 3rd World Conservation Congress , where he also chaired the Program and Policy Committee . After the two maximum possible terms of office, he ended this activity in 2008. In the same year he was appointed to the board of directors of the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research and by the Federal Cabinet to the Advisory Council for Environmental Issues (SRU).
