Richard Faust

Richard Faust (born June 24, 1927 in Dromersheim am Rhein, † November 11, 2000 in Frankfurt ) was a German zoologist , zoo director and conservationist.

Life

Richard Faust was born on June 24, 1927 in Dromersheim am Rhein. After attending elementary and high school, in 1943 he was drafted as a pupil as an air force helper, followed by the Reich Labor Service and the Wehrmacht . In 1945 he was wounded on the Eastern Front. The High School put fist after a special training for combatants, and could thus in 1946 the study of zoology , anthropology and paleontology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz begin. He obtained his doctorate there in 1951 with summa cum laude . After working as a research assistant at the zoological institute with the physiologist Wolfgang Freiherr von Buddenbrock from 1947 to 1952, he joined the Frankfurt Zoo as a research assistant in 1952 . In 1954 he was made a scientific assistant, in 1958 director Grzimek's official deputy. In this capacity, he kept Grzimek's back free during his numerous trips to the zoo, without benefiting from it in public. He was finally appointed director of the Frankfurt Zoo on May 1, 1974. He held this position until he retired in 1994. During his term of office, among other things, the construction of the Grzimek house for nocturnal animals falls .
