history

The club was founded in 1926 under the name Shqiponja Gjirokastër . From 1949 it was called simply Gjirokastër , in 1951 the name was changed to Puna Gjirokaster . Seven years later, the next name change was due when the club first gave itself its current name. Under this name, the greatest success in the club's history was achieved when the league ended as runner-up in 1978. In 1992 they changed their name to Shqiponja Gjirokastër . The club has had its current name since 2000.

After being relegated from the first division in 2002, qualification for the categoria superiore succeeded in 2003 as part of the restructuring of the Albanian league system . After four years in the second division, in 2006 the rise was due to the increase in the first division as fourth in the second division . In the first division, however, you could not hold on and the club rose again after a year in the second division. The same thing happened when first in the 2011/12 season through the championship in the second division, the promotion to the upper house succeeded, but the club then immediately relegated again.

In the 2016/17 season , Luftëtari played first class again - and also managed to stay in league with a good fourth place. Luftëtari also played good games in the 2017/18 season and was able to achieve third place. The 2018/19 season did not go so well. Luftëtari even risked relegation, but secured eighth place. As the bottom of the table, the league was no longer successful in the 2019/20 season .
