The Futbola Klubs Ventspils is a Latvian football club from the port city of Ventspils .

history

The FK Ventspils was formed in 1997 as a merger of the two second division clubs Nafta Ventspils and FK Venta and took over the license for the Virslīga from the second division champion Vecriga Riga and immediately succeeded in fourth place.

Also in the following years reached top positions (2000 to 2002 each as runner-up), so that the club was able to qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time in 2000 , but in the first round with the Hungarian representative Vasas Budapest after a 2-1 home win a 1: 3 defeat in the second leg failed. In 2002, after a 3-0 win and a 0-1 defeat in the second leg against FC Lugano, they qualified for the first round, but the team had no chance against Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart with two 1: 4.

On September 28, 2003, the team was able to lift a trophy for the first time when the Latvian Cup was won by a clear 4-0 against Skonto Riga . In the following two years the title could be defended; 2004 with a 2-1 win again against Skonto Riga, in 2005 after a 2-1 after extra time against Liepājas Metalurgs .

2006 finally achieved the first championship title in the club's history.

In 2007 the team successfully defended their title with a 1-0 win at Skonto Riga one matchday before the end of the season. As a result of the 2007 championship, the club played in the Champions League qualification, where they first prevailed against The New Saints FC from Wales, but then lost to Red Bull Salzburg without a chance (0-3 and 0-4). The fourth national cup was won in the same year.

In 2008, the third championship title in a row was won three game days before the end of the season.

In 2009 the team defeated Luxembourg champions F91 Dudelange 3-0 (at home) and 3-1 (away) in the second qualifying round of the Champions League . In the third round , the team met the Belarusian champions BATE Baryssau , who were defeated 1-0 in the first leg. The second leg was lost with 1: 2, so the team went through the away goals rule . In the fourth round, both games against FC Zurich were lost 1: 2 and 0: 3. The club was eliminated from the Champions League and continued to participate in the group stage of the Europa League, where they met Sporting Lisbon , SC Heerenveen and Hertha BSC . Although Hertha, Sporting (both away) and Heerenveen (at home) were each able to wrest a draw, they were nevertheless eliminated from the competition as bottom of the table.

In the Baltic League in 2007 Ventspils lost in the final against Liepājas Metalurgs with 1: 3 and 1: 5. In the 2009/10 season it was the first victory with a 5-3 on penalties against Sūduva Marijampolė . A year later, Ventspils managed to take part in the Baltic League Final again, but this time they were defeated by league rivals Skonto Riga on penalties 6: 7.

The team from the port city won their fourth championship in 2011, they also won the Latvian soccer cup, and they made it to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League . In 2013 the events were repeated, they reached the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League and again the yellow-blue won the double.
