The Baltic League 2009/10 was the fifth season of the football competition for Baltic club teams and took place between September 22, 2009 and July 4, 2010. The winner was FK Ventspils from Latvia, who won the final 5-3 on penalties against Sūduva Marijampolė from Lithuania.
mode
For the first time, the five best-placed teams from the Estonian Meistriliiga , the Latvian Virslīga and the Lithuanian A Lyga took part in the Baltic League . An additional place was given to the country from which the defending champions came, in this case Lithuania. Contrary to the two previous seasons, the tournament was played in a pure knockout system with a return game. In the event of a tie, the away goals rule decided again , and the final final was again decided in a single game.
Attendees
Due to the non-fulfillment of financial regulations in the licensing process, the five best-placed teams in the Lithuanian league did not take part, only three teams received the license for the top division in the first instance. Last year's winner of the Baltic League and second-placed A Lyga, FBK Kaunas , and sixth-placed A Lyga , Atlantas Klaipėda , initially voluntarily withdrew from the first division due to differences with the Lithuanian Football Association . Both teams were then transferred to the third division. In addition, the fifth-placed VMFD Žalgiris Vilnius was denied the license and the team was downgraded to the second division. Thus, in addition to the first, third and fourth places from Lithuania, who qualified regularly, also the seventh place FC Šiauliai from the first division and the first and third place from the second division, Tauras Tauragė and Banga Gargždai , took part in the competition.
In Latvia there was also a variation among the participants. Since after the season of the fifth placed FC Daugava Daugavpils merged with the fourth placed FC Dinaburg , one place became free. This was actually due to the sixth-placed FK Riga , but they had to file for bankruptcy, so that FK Jūrmala-VV moved up in seventh place.
