The Baltic League 1990 was the first season of football competition for Baltic club teams. It started on April 7, 1990 and ended on October 20, 1990. The winner was Žalgiris Vilnius from Lithuania.

background

In the wake of the Singing Revolution , which ultimately led to the collapse of the Soviet Union , Lithuania first declared its independence from the USSR on March 11, 1990. Žalgiris Vilnius appeared on the first day of the game in the highest Soviet league, but then withdrew from the competition. Other teams, however, partly remained in the leagues of the USSR Football Association until the end of 1991 . In the individual republics championships were sometimes played, but these only had the status of regional championships. Individual national championships of the Russian republics were not formed until 1990, and Lithuania was the pioneer here too. Estonia with the Meistriliiga and Latvia with the Virslīga followed in 1992 after they had declared their independence on August 20 and 21, 1991 respectively.

mode

A total of 18 teams took part in the Baltic League , including nine from Lithuania, six from Latvia, two from Estonia and one team from Russia. The game was played in pure league form with two legs, so that originally each team should play 34 games. Due to the withdrawal of one team from the current game operations, most teams only played 33 games, three teams even only 32. The team with the highest points at the end of the season was clear as the champions of this league.

The Baltic League was of particular importance in Lithuania. The first four teams of the A Lyga , in which the regional championship was played, competed against the best four Lithuanian teams of the Baltic League in the knockout system in order to play off the Lithuanian champions. Here sat Sirijus Klaipeda with 3: 2 in a penalty shoot-out against Ekranas Panevezys by. All Lithuanian teams of the first edition of the Baltic League also took part in A Lyga in 1991.

Attendees

With Žalgiris Vilnius only one team played in the highest Russian league and was able to occupy fourth place there in 1989. In addition to second division relegated KKI Daugava Riga , all other teams played in the third Russian league or below, including regional championships.
