San Gregorio Papa

Chiesa di San Gregorio Papa (degli Agostiniani Scalzi) is a late baroque church building in Palermo .

The church, located in the Capo district on Via Porta Carini, originally dates from the 14th century and was consecrated to Saint Therese. Allegedly during a Saracen attack, it was destroyed in 1686 and only rebuilt in 1740. A small Augustinian monastery was added to it.

The simple facade is dominated by a portico framed with columns, which is closed at the top by a blasted segmented gable. Above the gate is the coat of arms of the Confraternita di Maria Ss. del Paradiso, which has been the patron of the church since 1882.

The single-nave church interior with side chapels is closed off by a semicircular apse . The walls are structured by pilasters , which are topped off by capitals decorated with palmettes and garlands and connected by a rhythmically structured entablature.

The rectangular columned crypt behind the apse can be reached via the courtyard.
