The FK Žalgiris is a football club from the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and currently plays in the A lyga .
history
Žalgiris Vilnius was founded on January 3, 1947 when Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union. The club spent a total of eleven seasons, the first time in 1953, in the highest Soviet league , making it the most successful club from the Lithuanian Union Republic of the USSR.
Žalgiris Vilnius has played in its own Lithuanian league since 1990 . The club colors are traditionally green and white. So far, the club has won the Lithuanian championship three times (1991, 1992, 1999), compared to six cup wins (1966, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2003). Until some time ago Žalgiris Vilnius played in the Žalgiris Stadium , which was built in 1950 and has a capacity of 15,030. The club is currently located in the LFF stadium, which was renovated from 2011 to 2012 and has 5,422 seats.
The club has been renamed three times so far. In the year it was founded it was called "Dinamo", from 1948 to 1961 it was nicknamed "Spartakas". Since 1962 the association has been called "Žalgiris" in memory of the Battle of Tannenberg (1410) .
Žalgiris Vilnius was able to win the first two editions of the Baltic League . In 1990 the club conceded only one defeat in 32 games in the competition, which was played entirely in league mode, in 1993/94 Žalgiris won the final 10: 9 on penalties against Skonto Riga .
After the 2008 season, the Žalgiris finished fifth, the club was denied the license for the first division and decided to downgrade to the second division after fans had re-established the club under the name VMFD Žalgiris . In the next season, the direct rise succeeded. In 2012 they secured the Lithuanian Cup on penalties against last year's winner Ekranas Panevėžys . In addition, they finished second in the league and will play again internationally in the Europa League in 2012/13 , albeit only in qualifying. In the second qualifying round, the team was eliminated by Admira Wacker Mödling . In the following year the Lithuanian Cup was won again.
