Edvinas Gertmonas was born on June 1, 1996 in the town of Šilalė, in western Lithuania, and played in his youth at the Nacionalinė futbolo akademija , the national football academy of the Lithuanian Football Association . After going through all divisions in this, he made it into the professional squad of FK Tauras Tauragė in 2013 at the age of 16 , where he was initially considered the second goalkeeper behind Martynas Matuzas . In the 2013 game year , he was used in twelve of his team's 32 championship games and could not prevent relegation to 1 Lyga , the second highest football league in the country. The team had achieved eleven points with three wins and two draws, making them a clear candidate for relegation. Gertmonas made his professional debut soon after his 17th birthday on June 19, 2013 in a 3-0 home defeat by Ekranas Panevėžys .

After that, the tall goalkeeper is said to have played for the club in the second division and only came to his next station at the end of June, Atlantas Klaipėda . At Atlantas, he played in nine league games between the beginning of August and the end of November 2014 and was a regular at the Lithuanian first division team from mid-September to the end of the season. With the team, he finished the 2014 season in third place in the table and thus qualified for participation in the first qualifying round for the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League . After he had made his debut in the Lithuanian Football Cup with Tauras Tauragė in 2013/14 and was eliminated in the fourth round against Banga Gargždai , he was with Atlantas Klaipėda as a regular in 2014/15 . Here he came with the team, after initial difficulties when they defeated the fourth division TAIP Vilnius in the fourth round only on penalties, until the final, after the team clearly won the quarter and semi-finals. In the final, however, the team trained by Konstantin Sergejewitsch Sarsania lost to league rivals FK Žalgiris Vilnius with 0: 2.

Change to France

In August 2014 he was tested by the French first division club Stade Rennes , who were looking for a third goalkeeper for their professional team. Here he should compete with the young Frenchman Maxime Pattier for the place as third goalkeeper. After the transfer initiated by former professional Jean-Luc Buisine failed for the time being, Gertmonas did not come to France until the winter break of 2014/15, from where he was immediately loaned back to his home country to his ex-club Atlantas Klaipėda in order to gain match practice . For this he then appeared in 15 of the total of 36 league games in the 2015 season and competed with veteran Mindaugas Malinauskas for a starting place as a goalkeeper and was alternately on the bench with Marius Adamonis . After his real breakthrough in his home country, while the season in Lithuania continued without him, he returned to France in the summer of 2015. There he could not assert himself, however, and was not in a single competitive game of his team in the official squad in the 2015/16 season. He was also not available to the B team with play in the fifth class CFA 2 , but still trained with the professionals. In the meantime, he suffered from a ruptured muscle fiber from August to October 2015. With the French, he still has a valid contract until summer 2019.

National team career

Gertmonas gained his first experience in a Lithuanian youth national team in 2012 when he first appeared for the Lithuanian U-17 team. With this he completed the qualification for the U-17 European Championship 2013 in autumn 2012 . There he was eliminated with the team in the group stage as the last of Group 3. Up until 2013, he played a total of 16 U-17 international matches for his home country. From this year he also came to regular appearances in Lithuanian U-19 and U-21 national teams . With the U-19, he took part in the qualification for the U-19 European Championship 2015 , where he was used by Vytautas Vaškūnas in all three games of Group 13 and with his home country, the host of Group 13, as runner-up in the subsequent elite round advanced. In this, Lithuania was assigned to pot D on the 26th of 28 places and retired with the team as third in group 3 from the qualification; by then he had also been in the elite round in all three games. Until 2015 Edvinas Gertmonas was in ten U-19 international matches in the goal of Lithuania. As already mentioned, he was also used for the first time in the U-21s of his home country from 2013 and this year, among other things, he completed a qualifying game for the U-21 European Championship 2015 against his colleagues from Moldova .

Subsequently, he was called up by Arminas Narbekovas for two internationals against Russia and Ukraine , but only came on a brief stint in the second game against the Ukrainians. Another friendly international game followed in March when he was used over half time against Poland . While he was not part of the European Championship qualification in June, as he was also active in the U-19 national team, he sat on the Lithuanian bench in the two qualifying games in September 2013 without being used. With the team, he finished the qualification on the fifth of six places in Group 1 and could not qualify for the finals. He then played numerous friendlies between October 2014 and January 2015, especially against national teams from neighboring countries. After failing to play the first three games of qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2017 , Narbekovas and, immediately afterwards, Antanas Vingilys used him in the following four qualifying games in October and November 2015 over the full playing time. Under the former Lithuanian international Igoris Pankratjevas , Gertmonas made the leap to the senior national team of his home country in 2015 , for which he made his debut on June 8, 2015 in a friendly international game in a 2-0 defeat against Malta and over the full 90 Minutes was used.
