The 1 Lyga is the second highest division in Lithuanian football . In the competition held by the Lietuvos Futbolo Federacija , the national association, the climbers to the A Lyga are determined.
history
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the 1 Lyga was played for the first time in the 1991 season. At that time, 16 teams took part. Since then, the number of participating clubs has changed several times between eight and sixteen. Today there are 18 teams.
The record champions since the league was founded has been FK Dainava Alytus with a total of three titles (two of them as Alytis Alytus ).
In the 2010 season, the country's record champions, FBK Kaunas , set a new point record after its forced relegation to third division. Kaunas won all 27 games and ended the promotion season with 81 points ahead of second-placed Alytis Alytus , who came in on 51 points.
Current mode
Fourteen teams are currently (as of 2020) represented in 1 Lyga. They play against each other twice, so that each comes to 27 games this season. The league leader after the last matchday is promoted to the A Lyga . The two bottom of the table are automatically relegated to the third class II Lyga .
