Since it was founded in 1992, the number of participating teams has changed several times and thus the number of promoted and relegated teams has also varied. In the 2018 season, 15 teams will take part and play a double round with 28 match days. The two best-placed teams will be promoted to the Wyschejschaja Liha , which will be increased from 14 to 16 clubs for the 2016 season. The last placed descends into the third class Druhaja Liha .
