The 1st deild karla is the second highest division in Icelandic football . It is operated by the Icelandic Football Association.

history

The league was founded in 1955 (then under the name 2. deild karla). Before the 2007 season , the number of participants was increased to 12, before that there were only 10 participants for many years. Since 2008, the three top divisions have all 12 participating clubs.
