The FK Minsk ( Belarusian ФК Мінск , Russian ФК Минск ) is a football club from the Belarusian capital Minsk . The club, founded in 2006, has played in the Vysheyschaya Liha , the country's top division , since 2009 and won the Belarusian Cup in 2013 .

history

FK Minsk was formed in 2006 through the merger of the second division team Zmena Minsk with Tarpeda-SKA Minsk , which was last active in the third-highest division as the successor club to the traditional Torpedo Minsk club . The new club went to the second highest division called Pershaya Liha, where it won the championship in its first season in 2006 and rose to the highest division, the Wyschejschaja Liha . However, the team rose again in the following year as bottom of the table. In the 2008 season, the renewed rise as master of Pershaya Liha succeeded, in 2009 FK Minsk secured with a 9th place relegation in the top division. After a 3rd place in the 2010 season , the team took part in qualifying for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , where they were eliminated in the 2nd round against the Turkish club Gaziantepspor .

In the national cup, FK Minsk 2012 reached the final, which was lost to Naftan Nawapolazk on penalties. The following year, the Cup won their first title by beating Dinamo Minsk in the final , also on penalties. By winning the cup, FK Minsk reached the qualification for the Europa League for the second time in 2013/14 , where he was eliminated after victories against FC Valletta and FC St. Johnstone in the playoff round against Standard Liège .

Torpedo Minsk

The predecessor club Torpedo Minsk ( Russian Торпедо Минск , Belarusian Тарпеда Мінск / Tarpeda Minsk ) was long active in the Belarusian league within the Soviet Union , where it won the championship five times, four times in the 1960s. After Belarus gained independence in 1992, the club was one of the founding members of the Wyschejschaja Liha , to which he belonged until 2004 and mostly occupied midfield positions. From 1999 it was called Tarpeda-MAZ Minsk, from 2003 Tarpeda-SKA Minsk.

In 2000, the team was in the final of the Belarusian Cup , which was lost 2-1 against Slavija Mazyr . After two 4th places in the league in 2002 and 2003 and a 6th place in 2004, the club withdrew due to financial problems and started a fresh start in the third division, where they won the championship in 2005. For the 2006 season, Tarpeda-SKA Minsk merged with Zmena Minsk to form FK Minsk.
