Location and inhabitants

The core city of Jonava is located about 30 km northeast of the second largest Lithuanian city Kaunas , not far from the confluence of the Šventoji (German: Heiligenaa ) into the Neris . 52,000 people live in the self-governing municipality, 35,000 of whom live in the core city of Jonava (2004). In 1893 3069 Jews (92% of the 3350 inhabitants) lived in the city. In 1941 the Jews of Jonavas made up 80% of the population.

history

The place was founded around 1740, when Dominink Kossakowski (1711–1743) built a manor on the Neris and Varnaka for himself and lived there. His father was called Jonas Mykolas Kosakovskis (hence the Christian name , something like "Johannstadt"). In 1750 Marijona Kosakovskienė built the first wooden church, which later burned down. In 1750 the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Frederick August II granted Marija Kosakovskienė a privilege to found the town of Jonava. After that, the first city residents came to the place from neighboring villages.

In 1777 there were 40 Jewish families and in 1784 there were 59 families. 1793 was built in today's Old Town Jonava the Catholic Church of St. James the Apostle and then the monastery Jonava . In 1827 the Trinitarians were expelled from Jonava by the government. In 1832 the monastery was closed. Soldiers settled in the monastery until 1894. The city of Jonava was affected by the Polonization . In 1830 the church preached mostly Polish and only sometimes Lithuanian. In 1836 the Jonava post office became an important point of transport near Kaunas in the then Tsarist Russian Empire.

1864 the place Jonava received the town charter . In 1893 the first mills were built on Varnutė . After the great fire in 1904, the monastery building was sold to the parish.

The timber industry and handicrafts developed in the city . Here worked carpenter , carpenters, joiners. In 1912 a match factory was opened. In 1946 this factory became a furniture factory, which was converted into the Soviet Jonava Furniture Combine in 1958 . In the 1970s, the combine was one of the largest companies in Lithuania and employed 1,100 people (1977).

In 1950 Jonava became the center of the Jonava Rajon of Soviet Lithuania . In the Soviet era , the Jonava District People's Court was established , which is now subordinate to the Kaunas District Court .

In 1996 the new city coat of arms was confirmed by the Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas .

Culture

Jonava cultural center

The Jonava Cultural Center (JKC) with its branches in the Rajonggemeinde organizes most of the city's events. The center in the main building has two halls. The large hall has 650 seats and its stage is 254 m². The Kulturhaus has its own theater, music groups, choirs and dance groups.

Festivals

Every year Jonava with its Joninės Valley is the scene of a large and traditional midsummer festival , as the city is named after St. John . Jonava will be on the 23./24. June declared the "Republic of John". All day long Jonas and Janina (Johannes and Johanna) are congratulated. Wreaths of oak leaves are presented on the name day . There are numerous music bands that play in the city.

The international modern three-day art forum "Homo ludens" with various events and improvisations is held every year. The “Homo Ludens” park with sculptures was built next to the city's cultural center.

In 1965 the Jonava Music School was established. The current music department of the Jonava Art School now has a total of 250 students in the 6 sub-departments; around 50 children are admitted to the music department every year; there are around 40 musician graduates every year (as of 2015). The most modern concert hall in the municipality is Arena Jonava (since 2017). The main hall of the Jonava Cultural Center (JKC) also serves as a place for musical events. Several music festivals are held in the city.

The Jonava Municipal Theater dates back to 1985. Since 1994 it has had municipal theater status. It took part in many national and international amateur theater festivals (for example, in Gatchina (Russia), Jurmala (Latvia), Hronow (Czech Republic), Akureyri (Iceland), Denmark etc.).

The city has two stages. The newer central stadium Jonava is next to the Johannes-Fest-Tal, the old stadium on the left bank of the Neris. The football team FK Jonava plays in the A Lyga . Her daughter and Dubler team FK Jonava B plays in the LFF II lyga .

The basketball team “Jonavos SK Triobet II” plays in the Nacionalinė krepšinio lyga . By 2017, most of the basketball sporting events were held in the sports hall of the sports center. They are members of the Jonava volleyball association (lit. Jonavos tinklinio asociacija ), founded by the volleyball judge Žilvinas Galimovas. The women's volleyball team TSK Aušrinė takes part in the national and Baltic beach volleyball championships. The international Alfredas Ogonauskas Memorial Volleyball Championship has been taking place in Jonava since 2010 .

Chess and checkers

In the city's chess club there is a grandmaster in correspondence chess , Vytautas Andriulaitis , and there was an international master in chess ( Aidas Labuckas ). Checkers' athletes are united by the Jonavos rajono neįgaliųjų sporto klubas “Joneidra” association.

Jonava has two high schools (9-12 grades), two secondary schools (1-10 grades), two Progymnasien (1-8 grades), three primary schools , a youth school, an adult education center and other general education facilities. There is also an art school and some kindergartens and a children's home .

The first school was mentioned in a document in the 18th century. Around 1782 there was a community school founded by the Marians . In 1820 a school is mentioned in a document. After 13 years it was attended by 40 students. In 1820 the school was closed.

In 1867, a primary school with Russian as the language of instruction was founded in Jonava. In 1871 the primary school was moved from Rumšiškės ; a craft class was newly established. In 1919 a Progymnasium was founded .

In 1935, a walled school with two floors was built in the city center. She went to middle school. In 1937 the elementary school at Jonava train station started its activity. In 1970 it became the city's 3rd middle school.

In 1965 the music school was founded , which later developed into the Jonava Art School. In 1974 the 4th middle school (now Senamiesčio High School) was opened. In 1981 the 5th middle school and in 1988 the 6th middle school were opened in the new microrajon Rimkai . So there were a total of six middle schools in the city, including a Russian-speaking middle school (founded in 1968).

Jonava is located on the main A 6 road , which is part of the European route 262 between Kaunas and the Latvian border near Zarasai .

There are connections to Klaipėda , Kaunas and the capital Vilnius via Jonava station on the Kaišiadorys - Liepāja railway line (Latvia) . The station building was built in 1871 by the Libau - Romny -Bahn (Ukraine). At that time there were direct connections to Saint Petersburg and Liepāja. The Jonava Railway Bridge over the Neris and the Jonava Bridge were built in 1914.

Via the Jonava bus station in the center of the city there are connections to many district centers of Lithuania and the most important settlements of the district municipality.
