Jeronimas Ralys (born September 28, 1876 in Antapusinė , Viduklė district, Raseiniai district ; † December 17, 1921 in Jonava , Lithuania ) was a Lithuanian doctor and translator, an honorary citizen of the Jonava district .

Life

Ralys graduated from the Julius Janonis High School in Šiauliai in 1896 . His favorite subjects were history, literature and classical philology (Greek and Latin). Already in the fifth grade, he started with the first translations of the Odyssey of Homer . In 1903 he completed his medical studies at the Medical Faculty of Moscow University in Russia . He was involved in the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania . From 1908 he worked in Prienai , Daujėnai , Jonava. Drafted as a soldier in 1914, he returned to Jonava in 1919.

He became famous for his translation of the Odyssey into Lithuanian, which was published in 1921. He continued his translation work with Iliad , which appeared in 1930 after being completed by other authors.

The former 1st middle school Jonava, now Jeronimas-Ralys-Gymnasium in Jonava (district Lietava ) was named after Ralys .
