history

In 1750 the first wooden Catholic church was built. In 1776 the neighboring village of Skaruliai passed to Bishop Juozapas Kazimieras Kosakovskis (1738–1794) and the Jonava Monastery was founded for Marians . In 1791 today's St. Apostle Jacob Church and monastery were built. These buildings formed the city center. The first inhabitants of neighboring villages came to the city center. The town of Jonava consisted of the manor and the settlement on the right bank of the Neris in the 18th century .

In 1827 the Trinitarians were expelled from Jonava by the government. The soldiers settled in the monastery until 1894. The place Jonava received city rights in 1864. After the great fire in the town of Jonava in 1904, which almost endangered the church, the monastery building was sold to the parish in 1908.
