Karmėlava is a town in the Kaunas district , located on the left bank of the Neris , northeast of Kaunas , on the Kaunas – Jonava motorway .
history
Karmėlava was founded in 1387 by Władysław II Jagiełło . In 1529 the Church of St. Anne in Karmėlava was mentioned in a document. In 1792 the Magdeburg Law was granted by Stanislaus II August Poniatowski .
In 1979 there were 3664 residents here. A military airfield was built here in Soviet Lithuania and the Karmėlava missile base was established (with a point in Gulbiniškiai , Jonava district ).
The Karmėlava cemetery is noteworthy , although it was only opened in 1985, but covers an area of over 80 hectares. Around 1000 funerals take place every year.
Kaunas Airport in Karmėlava has been in operation since 1988 . In 2000 the center of the Baltic States for air surveillance was established here.
