Description and use

Otatea species grow as loose, perennial clumps . They form short rhizomes . The woody stalks reach heights of 0.2 to 1 meter ( Otatea acuminata ssp. Aztecorum 'Dwarf') up to 6 meters (e.g. Otatea glauca 'Mayan Silver') and a diameter of less than 4 mm. The stalks are seldom hollow; the sheaths are brownish and rough and peel off over time. The species prefer sunny locations and tolerate temperatures down to just under freezing point. The weeping bamboo species can be propagated by dividing or cuttings. They make ears of wheat .
