Otatea acuminata ( . Syn : Arundinaria acuminata Munro , Yushania acuminata (Munro) McClure ) is a bamboo - type in the genus otatea ( Otatea ).
description
Otatea acuminata is a neotropical , clump-forming bamboo species that is reminiscent of giant horsetail . It forms short rhizomes. The leaves are up to 30 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. The branches are heavily drooping. The stalks are overhanging, have a diameter of 2 to 4 cm, are 2 to 4 m high (in Mexico up to 10 m).
etymology
The name Otatea comes from Otate, the name for bamboo in Nahuatl (Aztec). acuminata means "long pointed".
distribution
The species comes from western Mexico and lives there at altitudes from 500 to 1600 m above sea level in dry forests together with oaks , acacias and white rubber trees . But it also occurs in Honduras and Costa Rica.
Culture and use
Otatea acuminata is not winter hardy and needs temperatures above 5 ° C. But it tolerates dry and also slightly calcareous locations. This bamboo species grows unprotected in Europe in a Mediterranean climate.
In Mexico, the stalks are used to make baskets, walking sticks and broomsticks.
