history

Žeimiai was mentioned in 1319 by Maciej Stryjkowski (1547–1593) in the description of the battle of Gediminas with the Crusader order and 1363 Zeymen in historical sources. In 1364 Sviloniai was mentioned in Crusader chronicles and in 1382 Kulva in the new Prussian chronicle. In 1522 Lipniki and Lipniki Manor were mentioned. The manor belonged to the Skorulski dynasty , which is why the place was called Skaruliai in 1592 . In the middle of the 18th century Kosakovskiai bought the Skaruliai manor. After 1750 the town of Jonava was built on the other bank of the Neris .

Jonava Raion was formed in June 1950 from 14 perimeters from Kaunas District , 8 perimeter from Kėdainiai District , 1 perimeter from Širvintos District, and 4 perimeter from Ukmergė District . From 1950 to 1953 the Rajon belonged to the Kaunas region in Soviet Lithuania . In December 1962 the Jonava Rajon was annexed to the Kaunas Rajon, but was re-established in 1965.

1962, built the Soviet nitrogen fertilizer -Werk G / S Azotas in the village Jonalaukis .

In 1986 the Taurosta road bridge was built over the Neris in Gudžioniai , 2 kilometers from the town of Jonava to connect the chemical company " Azotas " with the village of Laukagaliai and thus the Rajon town.

On March 20, 1989, there was a chemical disaster at G / S AZOTAS. In the Soviet operation about 1,000 liquidators from all over Lithuania , Latvia , Belarus , Russia and Ukraine took part in the elimination of the negative consequences of the Jonava chemical disaster , the largest industrial disaster in Lithuania and one of the major technological disasters in the Soviet Union .

After Lithuania regained independence, there was a municipal reform. In 1995 the Jonava Rajong Municipality was established in the Kaunas District . The Rajongemeinde was divided into administrative districts. The Jonava District is the largest district in the municipality. October 2009 one formed 48 subdistricts ( seniūnaitija ).

Classical swine fever occurred in 2011 in the Šilai farm of the pork company UAB “Beržų kompleksas” and in 2017 there was African swine fever . In 2011 16,000 and in 2017 around 23,464 pigs of the bred landrace were to be killed.

religion

In 1622 the Catholic St. Anne's Church Skaruliai was built. In 1750 the first wooden church was built in Jonava and in 1793 the second Catholic church.

In 1893 3069 Jews (92% of the 3350 inhabitants) lived in the city of Jonava.

In 1932 there were seven synagogues in Jonava. So far, four Orthodox churches (in Užusaliai , Rimkai , Perelozai , Baltromiškė ) have been preserved.

Today's community is predominantly Catholic. The Jonava deanery of the Roman Catholic diocese of Kaunas has eight parishes with eight churches (in the old town Jonava , Skaruliai , Bukonys , Kulva , Panoteriai ) and five chapels (in Žeimiai , Šilai and Šmatai ).
