Širvintos ( German Schirwindt , Polish Szyrwinty ) is a small town and seat of the Rajongemeinde Širvintos in the east of Lithuania in the Vilnius district . It has 5,860 inhabitants. (2016)
The name of the city is derived from the river Širvinta that flows through Širvintos.
history
Širvintos was first mentioned in 1475 when the first church was built on the site. But there are indications that the place already existed in the 14th century.
It wasn't until 1950 that Širvintos received city rights . During the time of Soviet Lithuania , a public hospital (now VšĮ Širvintų ligoninė) was built.
