The Gaižiūnai military training area (lit. Gaižiūnų poligonas ) is a military training area in Lithuania . It is located near the village Gaižiūnai in jonava district municipality , in Kaunas district , central Lithuania . The territory is 5520 ha. The Gaižiūnai military training area was established in 1930. Before that, the Lithuanian armed forces had the Varėna military training area in the Alytus district , southern Lithuania . In Soviet Lithuania , the Gaižiūnai military training area was used by the Soviet Army . In 2016 it was decided to expand the area up to 12,000 hectares.
