Carl Cohnen

Carl Cohnen (born August 7, 1887 in Mönchengladbach ; † July 20, 1976 there ) was a German landscape and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School and the Rhenish Secession .

Life

Cohnen, son of the saddler, upholsterer and decorator Peter Joseph Cohnen and his wife Maria, née Jammers, studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he was a student of Eduard von Gebhardt and Julius Paul Junghanns , most recently a master student of Adolf Münzer . In 1911/1912 he stayed in Alsace to study. During the First World War , among other things, he worked as a restorer in his parents' shop. In the winter semester of 1923 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where Karl Caspar was his teacher. In 1924/1925 he traveled to Italy , then France and Spain . There he met Georges Braque , Tsuguharu Foujita and Dimitrios Galanis .

In the early 1930s he returned to Mönchengladbach and became a member of the Rhenish Secession . The later philosopher Hans Jonas was a private student of Cohn's at the time . During this time Cohnen was involved in the Kampfbund for German culture . In his local group Mönchengladbach he headed the specialist group "Fine Arts". From 1933 to 1934 he was chairman of the Mönchengladbach artists' association “Die Kante”, and in 1934 cultural warden for Mönchengladbach of the district management and local branch of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts . From 1942 he did military service. After the Second World War he became a member of the art community “Die Planke” and the Düsseldorf “Künstlergruppe 1949”.

Cohnen was friends with the Düsseldorf painter Albert Henrich . Most recently he was based in Willich - Neersen . Cohnen's works can be found in the Flensburg City Museum and the Mönchengladbach City Museum , among others .
