history

The RKD was opened in 1932 with a foundation of Dutch art from the estate of Cornelis Hofstede de Groot under the name Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische en Ikonografische Documentatie . Today's core of the inventory is European art from the Middle Ages to the present day and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures as well as media art and design. There is also an extensive press, photo and document archive. The facility operates a database in which more than 225,000 entries on artists and over 70,000 entries on works of art can be called up. The Documentation Center also publishes the Dutch version of the Art and Architecture Thesaurus .

The RKD has been supported by the Hofstede de Groot Foundation since June 17, 1993 . Works of art that are privately owned are examined by the RKD for a fee.
