Descriptive and critical inventory of the works of the greatest Dutch painters of the 17th century

Title page of the German edition from 1907

His main work is the descriptive and critical directory of the works of the most outstanding Dutch painters of the 17th century , which appeared in 10 volumes from 1907 to 1928. His aim was to replace the work A catalog raisonné of the works of the most eminent Dutch, Flemish, and French painters by the art dealer John Smith , which appeared in 9 volumes from 1829 to 1842 . He published the volumes in German and the translator Edward G. Hawke translated them immediately so that they could appear in English shortly afterwards ( A catalog raisonné of the works of the most eminent Dutch painters of the seventeenth century ). The German edition was published by the Paul Neef publishing house in Esslingen and by the F. Kleinberger art dealer in Paris, the English edition by Macmillan & Co. in London.
