Paulus Potter
Paulus Pieterszoon Potter (baptized November 20, 1625 in Enkhuizen ; buried January 17, 1654 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch Baroque landscape and animal painter .
Life
Paulus Potter learned in the Amsterdam studio of his father Pieter Symonsz Potter and with Jacob de Wel , possibly also with Pieter Lastman and Claes Moeyaert . In 1646 he became a member of the St. Luke Guild of Delft . Around 1649 he lived in The Hague , where he also became a member of the guild. In 1652 he returned - meanwhile married to Adriana Backen Eynde - back to Amsterdam, where the physician Dr. Nicolaes Tulp became his mentor .
The first known works date from 1641. His work up to his early death from tuberculosis comprises a total of about 130 paintings, mainly Dutch pasture landscapes with detailed depictions of cattle, genre pictures and hunting scenes. His animal pieces are world famous. His best-known work is the large-format painting The Young Bull from 1647, which can be seen today in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. His hometown Enkhuizen honored him with a memorial that depicts the young Potter by drawing.
