Adriaen van de Velde

Adriaen van de Velde (baptized November 30, 1636 in Amsterdam ; buried January 21, 1672 there ) was a Dutch painter and etcher .

Life

Adriaen van de Velde came from an important Dutch family of painters and was the son of the draftsman Willem van de Velde (* around 1611–1693). The painter Willem van de Velde (1633–1707) was his brother. His exact date of birth is not known, but it is certain that he was baptized on November 30, 1636 in the Oude Kerk .

Van de Velde received his first art lessons from his father. Through his mediation he later came to Haarlem , where he became a student of Jan Wijnants and Paulus Potter . In addition to the latter, Philips Wouwerman in particular had a great influence on van de Velde.

Returning to his hometown, van de Velde worked for some time in Karel Dujardin's studio and then settled down as a freelance artist. At the age of 21 he married Maria Oudekerk there on April 5th . In addition to his own works, van de Velde also worked with many other landscape painters; Among other things, he designed people and animals in the works of Jan Hackaert , Jan van der Heyden and Jan Wijnants.

The painter Adriaen van de Velde died in 1672. His funeral took place on January 21st in the Nieuwe Kerk .

assessment

With his early work, van de Velde is still completely overshadowed by the Haarlem School and his role models Paulus Potter and Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem . Later he found his own style and - despite a short creative period - over 400 pictures were created by his death (catalog raisonné by Cornelis Hofstede de Groot ). His sketches, which were created in nature, not only formed the basis for his carefully composed pictures, but were also often "reused" as etchings. His landscape pictures are characterized by careful reproduction of the details, clear - harmonious composition and high-contrast, warm colors.
