A flame starting device (also flame starting system or flame system) is a cold start aid for larger diesel engines . If the coolant temperature has dropped below 10 ° C, the flame starter is switched on automatically when the ignition key is turned to "drive position". After the voltage-dependent preheating phase of 20 to 25 seconds has elapsed, it is ready for operation and the engine can be started. The flame starting system is supplied with filtered fuel via the pre-feed pump. The fuel injected into the flame system ignites on the hot glow plug. This means that the air flowing past is heated up to 800 ° C for a short time. This significantly improves the ignition conditions in all cylinders. To control the fuel supply, a solenoid valve switched by the glow control unit is installed in the fuel supply line in front of the flame glow plug; in the flame system with combustion chamber, the solenoid valve is integrated in the flame system. The glow control unit monitors the glow plug, the solenoid valve and the cable connections as part of the on-board diagnosis . If an error occurs, this is indicated to the driver via a control lamp or a display with an error code.
