Franz Ludwig Zahn (born October 6, 1798 in Wasserthaleben ; † March 20, 1890 at Gut Fild near Moers ) was a German educator.

Life

Zahn was the son of pastor Johann Gottlieb Zahn (born September 6, 1762 in Wasserthaleben; † April 3, 1845 ibid) and of Amalie Karoline Christine Koch (born January 1, 1771 in Großenehrich; † February 17, 1853 ibid).

Dental studied 1817-1820 at the University of Jena jurisprudence and 1822-1824 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin Protestant theology . In 1825 he joined Wilhelm Harnisch as a seminar teacher in the Weißenfels teachers 'seminar , from where he was appointed director of Fletcher's teachers' seminar in Dresden in 1827 .

In the same year he married in St. Gallen Dating Anna Schlatter (born April 28, 1800 St. Gallen, † 8 January 1853 in Moers), a daughter who was already known in pietistic circles Anna Schlatter -Bernet (1773-1826 ). The marriage resulted in a total of ten children (including Johannes Zahn (educator), Theodor Zahn (theologian), Franz Michael Zahn (theologian), Franz Volkmar Zahn). Zahn left Dresden for Moers in 1832. As Adolf Diesterweg's successor , he became the director of the Moers teachers' seminar and prevailed against his competitor Johann Jakob Ewich . In 1836 he founded a preparatory institute (also known as "Filder Educational Institute" or " Martinstift ") on his Fild estate near Moers.

He also set up an institution for the deaf and the blind on the estate. Both institutions were financed through the sale of books that were published by Zahn in his own "Rheinische Schulbuchhandlung" (later published by August Bagel ) and a loan from the Prussian state. In 1848 he was one of the initiators in founding the "Association of Protestant Teachers for Rhineland and Westphalia". His magazine “Schulchronik” became the official organ of the association, later the supplement “ Der Grafschafter ” was added to it, which developed into a remarkable newspaper for the Lower Rhine and can be seen as one of the roots of today's “ Rheinische Post ”. In 1857 Ferdinand Stiehl removed him from the position of director of the seminar. Zahn then continued his retirement at Gut Fild near Moers. The preparation institute as well as the institute for the deaf, dumb and blind were continued by his son Franz Volkmar.
