The zoo Hirschfeld is located in Hirschfeld , Voigtsgrün district , near Zwickau in the Saxon district of Zwickau .
Records by Mrs. Martha von Arnim (née von Schlegell) show that the area with its trees has been protected for centuries.
Maps from 1870 show that an animal enclosure already existed at this point. It belonged to the owner of the Planitz estate , Mr. Alexander von Arnim, who kept deer here. In 1890 a hunting lodge was built in the enclosure, which still exists today and is known as a "log cabin". In 1909 the brother, Mr. Arno von Arnim, inherited Voigtsgrün and thus also the animal enclosure.
In 1956 the approximately 6 hectare enclosure was converted into a zoo. The first stockings included red deer , red fox and badger .
Today around 600 animals of 90 different species live on the extended area. These include raccoon dogs , wild boars , bears , wolves , pot-bellied pigs , waders , heather sheep , raccoons , porcupines , European mouflons , bison , snowy owls , monkeys and ferrets . The site also includes trees that are up to 450 years old.
In addition to the animal enclosures, there is also a petting zoo , restaurants , minigolf and children's playground on the site . Visitors are allowed to bring their dogs into the zoo.
In mid-2017, the construction of a new facility for the bison began.
