Jan Wijnants (* around 1632 probably in Haarlem ; † January 23, 1684 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Neither the exact date of birth nor the place of birth of Jan Wijnants are documented. He was probably born around 1632 as the son of the art dealer Jan Wijants in Haarlem. In 1660 he moved to Amsterdam, where, in addition to painting, he also ran an inn and died in 1684.

His early works in the 1650s were influenced by the painter Dirck Wijntrack . During this time, farmhouses are often found as a motif in his pictures. In his later works, buildings take a back seat and dune landscapes form the focus of his landscape paintings. Adriaen van de Velde was one of his students . His landscape painting influenced painters such as François Boucher and Thomas Gainsborough in the 18th century .
