Adriaen van Ostade
Adriaen van Ostade (* 1610 in Haarlem ( Lübeck is often mentioned in older literature ), baptized December 10, 1610 , † 1685, buried in Haarlem on May 2, 1685 ; birth name Adriaen Hendricx) was a Dutch painter and etcher. Isaac van Ostade was his brother and student.
Life
Adriaen van Ostade was the son of a baker in Lubeck. He became (together with Adriaen Brouwer ) a pupil of Frans Hals and worked in his manner until around 1639. From then on he followed Rembrandt's style of painting , which his inclination for the painterly exploitation of chiaroscuro had already met earlier. He died in Haarlem on May 2, 1685.
Ostade painted a large number of mostly humorous, also “single-figure” genre pictures of small format from the lives of citizens and farmers: smokers, drinkers, gamblers, quacks, dancers, brawls, etc., sometimes also portraits. In the first period of his work, influenced by Hals, from which around 40 pictures can be traced, a striving for sharp, lively characteristics and for coarse humor can be recognized.
In addition to the chiaroscuro effect, the images of the second period are characterized by naivety of conception and cozy humor. The pictures of the third period (mostly interiors with figures) are distinguished by their careful execution in a bright, luminous tone. Paintings by him can be found in the galleries in Berlin, Dresden, Vienna (Imperial Gallery, Liechtenstein), Paris ( Louvre ), Munich (Pinakothek), Amsterdam, The Hague and St. Petersburg. Their number is around 400. The main works are: The organ grinder and the peasant society in Berlin , The interior of a hut and the schoolmaster in the Louvre , The peasants in the tavern in Munich , The quack in Amsterdam , Peasant festival in Petersburg , The painter's studio in Amsterdam and The Painter at the Easel in Dresden . He has also left numerous watercolors, ink drawings and etchings.
