Gerd-Helge Vogel (born April 18, 1951 in Zwickau ) is a German art historian .

Life

Gerd-Helge Helmut Vogel was born in Zwickau in Saxony in 1951 and grew up as the son of the general practitioner Helmut Vogel and his wife Lisa , nee. Leupold , in Hartenstein in the Ore Mountains . From 1966 to 1970 he attended the Extended High School (EOS) in Aue in Saxony, where he also completed vocational training as a lathe operator in the Blema company . After graduating from high school in 1970, he did eighteen months of military service as part of compulsory military service before starting his studies in art and Dutch studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB). In 1976 the professors Peter H. Feist and Harald Olbrich graduated with a diploma .

Employment

Vogel started his career as a research assistant at the Center for Art Exhibitions of the GDR - Neue Berliner Galerie (ZfK) in the Altes Museum in Berlin , where he co-curated around 35 international art exhibitions that were held within the framework of cultural agreements between the GDR and other countries in Berlin and other cities of the GDR were realized. They gave him practical experience in exhibition and gave him insight into a diverse spectrum of artistic creation from antiquity (e.g. Thracian gold treasure) to contemporary international art (e.g. Denmark). In doing so, he was confronted with almost all genres and epochs of art , which ensured his openness and interest in art phenomena of all kinds. At the same time, he held guest lectures on Old Dutch Painting at the HUB, so as not to lose the connection to research and teaching during his practical work in exhibitions .

From 1979 to 1982 graduated bird at the University of Greifswald (EMAU) is a postgraduate , he with the promotion graduated to pursue at this university a university career. Through the research focus "Art of Romanticism" set by his doctoral mother Hannelore Gärtner , Vogel has been involved in this specialization since he was an assistant. He participated in the III. to VI. International Greifswald Romantic Conference with corresponding research topics. A research stay at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with Professor Ilja Veldman gave him the prerequisite for his habilitation (1989) “The Dream of Batavisch Arcadia. Studies on the theory and practice of historicism in Dutch painting around 1800 ”.

After the German reunification , Vogel was granted the status of a private lecturer . Since 1994 he has revived the tradition of the "International Greifswald Romantic Conferences" for further research profiling of art history at the University of Greifswald and thus organized the VI. to XII. Romantic Conference, for which he also edited the scientific conference proceedings. Gradually he was able to establish an extensive network of international research with which he carried out various publication projects at home and abroad. His friends include (t) en u. a. Professors Konstanty Kalinowski (Poznań), Minoru Saito (Hiroshima), Juhan Maiste (Tallinn, Tartu), Gao Jianping (Beijing), Zdravko Radman (Zagreb), Joao Vicente Ganzarolli de Olivera (Rio de Janeiro), Wanghen Chen (Wuhan) , Shenbing Zhang (Tsingtau), Jale Nejdet Erzen (Ankara) and the doctors Dariusz Kacprzak (Stettin), Thorkild Kjærgaard (Nuuk). This led him to many international congresses in France , Japan , China , Brazil , Finland , the Czech Republic , Latvia , Turkey and Great Britain . A six-week travel grant from the Kachima Foundation to Japan also enabled him to conduct comparative studies on garden art , which were reflected in numerous publications.

After his fixed-term employment contract with EMAU expired, Vogel went to the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn as a visiting professor for one semester in 1999 and 2001 . In the meantime, he organized several art exhibitions with museums in Zwickau , Jena , Greifswald , Güstrow , Cottbus , Poznań , among others For research stays in the strand Print Room of the University College in London , in the Witt Library of the Courtauld Institute in London, the Department for Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library and the Natural History Museum . In London he expanded and deepened his international scientific experience.

In 2005, the Design Department at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) offered him the opportunity to develop an independent course in the theory and history of scientific illustration for the scientific visualization branch , which he carried out until his retirement in 2016. At the same time, he has since worked as a freelance art historian in Germany and works as a curator of exhibitions, as an organizer of the Zurich Symposia on Scientific Illustration and the International Cloudburg Symposia on Art, and as a publicist of numerous publications on art history.
