Caspar David Friedrich Institute

The Caspar David Friedrich Institute of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Greifswald offers the possibility of studying fine arts and art history at one institute. Art theory and art education are offered as complementary focal points .

The institute goes back to the 18th century academic drawing room, which has been under the direction of Johann Gottfried Quistorp since 1788 . Caspar David Friedrich also learned in this drawing room . In 1907 the seminar for art history was founded by Max Semrau and a library and slide library were set up. Caspar David Friedrich's 100th anniversary, the institute in 1940 at the instigation of the then rector was Kurt Wilhelm-Kästner in (1893-1976) Caspar David Friedrich Institute renamed. The Institute for Art Education followed in 1946. In 2001 the bachelor's degree and in 2003 the master's degree in visual arts and art history were established.
