Wilhelm Titel (born February 16, 1784 in Boltenhagen , † March 24, 1862 in Greifswald ) was a German painter and academic drawing teacher at the University of Greifswald .

Life and accomplishments

Wilhelm Titel was the first child of pastor Friedrich Andreas Gotthilf Titel (* May 23, 1748 in Trieglaff ; † May 31, 1819 in Boltenhagen ) and his wife Christina Juliana Kellmann (* December 11, 1758 in Wolgast ; † February 5, 1834 in Boltenhagen). He first began studying theology at the University of Greifswald , which he soon gave up in favor of painting. He received his training in 1801 at the Dresden Art Academy and from 1802 to 1806 at the Vienna Art Academy . In Vienna he was influenced by the French painter René Theodore Berthou (1776-1859). From 1806 to 1819 he lived in Italy , mostly in Rome and Florence , where he lived with Jakob Philipp Hackert .

In 1819 he returned to Western Pomerania after the death of his father and initially worked as a portrait painter in Stralsund. In 1826 he succeeded Johann Gottfried Quistorp as a university drawing teacher in the drawing room of the University of Greifswald, now the Caspar David Friedrich Institute . He made studies after old Italian masters and many characteristic portraits of university professors, which are now hanging again in the council hall of the University of Greifswald. In addition, he also painted northern German landscapes. In 1851 he was appointed professor.

Titel donated his study collection to the University of Greifswald while he was still alive. A stock of 124 sheets is preserved there today.
