Joachim John
Joachim John (born January 20, 1933 in Tetschen , Czechoslovakia ; † March 26, 2018 in Neu Frauenmark ) was a German painter , graphic artist and author .
Life
John's family had to leave Czechoslovakia in 1945 and went to school in Köthen . The parents moved to Zerbst in 1948 , where the father fled to West Germany in 1951 after an argument with the mayor and the family from the GDR . Joachim John returned to the GDR after a short time and lived with his grandmother in Zerbst. After graduating from high school in 1952, he trained as a chemical worker. After the authorities refused to travel to West Germany for the funeral of their father in 1953, John and his grandmother left the GDR illegally. John lived for a year on auxiliary and casual work with his mother in Kleve , but returned to the GDR in 1954. He then lived in Dresden-Loschwitz , worked at the State Operetta House as a prop master and completed a four-month course at the Leipzig Theater Academy . In 1955 he began studying art education at the Caspar David Friedrich Institute of the Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald .
In 1959 John broke off his studies and moved to Zempin on the island of Usedom . In 1961 Fritz Cremer arranged for him to take part in the exhibition “Young Artists - Painting” at the Berlin Academy of the Arts , where he became a master student of Hans Theo Richter in 1963 . In the spring of 1965 he had his first exhibition in the art gallery of the Institute for Teacher Training in Berlin-Weißensee . During a three-month study tour through the Soviet Union , John visited the major museums in Moscow and Leningrad and traveled through the Caucasus .
From 1966 Joachim John lived as a freelance artist in Berlin. In 1977 he moved to Frauenmark near Schwerin . In 1982 he was given a study trip to Colombia , in 1986 he became a member of the Academy of the Arts of the GDR and in 1990 took over a visiting professorship in the visual communication department at the Kassel University . From 1991 to 1993 John was secretary of the visual arts section of the Academy of the Arts in Berlin (East) and a member of the Twentieth Committee appointed by Heiner Müller , which shaped the process of unifying the two Berlin academies of the arts.
Joachim John was a member of the United Academy of Arts Berlin . He died in March 2018 at the age of 85 after a brief illness.

- 1998: Culture Prize of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
- 2017: Egmont Schaefer Prize for Drawing
