Gabriele Mucchi (born June 25, 1899 in Turin , † May 10, 2002 in Milan ) was an Italian painter , graphic artist and architect . He is considered to be the co-founder of " New Realism " (Nuovo Realismo).

Life

After graduating from high school, Gabriele Mucchi studied civil engineering and architecture at the University of Bologna from 1916 to 1923 , which was interrupted by military service in 1917/18. After completing his studies, he first worked in a construction company in Rome , and from 1927 in an architectural office in Milan . A stay in Berlin from 1928 to 1930 was followed by a longer stay in Paris from 1931 to 1934. In the following years, his name became known beyond the borders of Italy through impressive wall paintings . His studio became the meeting place for the anti-fascist group Corrente .

After the Second World War , in which he fought first as a soldier and later as a partisan , he co-founded the magazine Realismo .

Mucchi lived in the GDR for a long time after the Second World War . From 1956 to 1961 he was a professor at the Art Academy Berlin-Weißensee , from 1961 to 1963 at the Caspar David Friedrich Institute at the University of Greifswald . He then lived in Milan and Berlin.

Gabriele Mucchi was from 1933 to 1969 with the sculptor Jenny Mucchi-Wiegmann (who died in 1969) and was married in 1973 to the graphic artist Susanne Arndt.

The grave of Mucchi and his first wife is in the row of artist graves in the central cemetery in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde .
