CA Spectrum is a software for network management , which was developed by Aprisma. Spectrum is used to monitor a company's entire IT infrastructure (network, server, printer, etc.) and also offers service management in which the individual components are assigned to the IT services.

The software is being further developed and marketed by the American software company CA.

history

Spectrum comes from Aprisma , a spin-off from Cabletron Systems , which Concord itself took over in 2005. Concord itself was taken over by CA Technologies shortly thereafter . Spectrum was conceptually created in 1989 - but had hardly any success in the first few years, as other products on the market were less powerful, but also clearer. The success came with the independence of Aprisma from Cabletron Systems (today Enterasys Networks ) and thus with the independence from a hardware manufacturer.
Since about 2012 you can notice a significant modernization of the tool, so it now also includes a REST API for automation and integration. The first customer in Europe was the University of Bern in 1990 and shortly afterwards the European Center for Nuclear Research . Many large companies and providers use CA Spectrum as a fault management system.

Functionality

Spectrum was based very early on on a modeling of the network and the other IT infrastructure and can not only determine the status of individual components by polling , but also depict the relationships and use them for correlations. Relationships can be represented as "is connected with", "belongs to", "is set up in" etc.

The software is a client-server application with a web server as an intermediate layer. The comprehensive client is a JAVA-JNLP application that is loaded from the "Oneclick" web server and then communicates with it. The "Oneclick" web server communicates with one or more "Spectroservers", which perform the actual polling, root cause and alarm processing. The Spectroserver keeps the monitored network or its model in a BerkeleyDB.

Since version 9.2 there is also a REST-API available that allows direct access to the models, attributes, relations and alarms. The GUI of the Oneclick JNLP client is defined via XML files and these can be modified as far as possible.

The new web client, which has been further developed since version 10.0, initially only consisted of an alarm console and was gradually expanded to include a topology view in 10.1 / 10.2. He does not yet have the flexibility of the Oneclick JNLP client, but it is to be expected that large customers will then use the advantages of integration via the REST API and then integrate their own GUIs.

With version 10 the Spectroserver was ported to 64 bit and the possible number of monitored devices / models has been expanded many times over. Customers with very large networks no longer have to divide the network over several Spectroserver / Landscapes, but can now monitor the entire network or larger parts with less hardware.

Spectrum mainly uses SNMP for monitoring. In contrast to some other tools, the admin does not have to take care of the "device certification" himself.
