August Matthias Hagen mainly worked on city and landscape views in sepia , aquatint and mixed media . Motifs from the Alps and the work of Caspar David Friedrich had a great influence on him. In Hagen's work, the influences of the ideal classicist landscape are blurred with romanticism .

The best known work of August Matthias Hagens are the six aquatint views of university buildings in Tartu. They were published on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reopening of the university in 1827/28.

In 1832 Hagen produced various views from Livonia. They represent Karksi ( Karkus ), Keila-Joa ( Castle Fall ) and Tartu and its surroundings. In 1835/36 Hagen worked on the depictions of some Finnish islands.
