August Matthias Hagen (* February 12 . Jul / 23. February 1794 greg. In Vijciems , Governorate of Livonia , † November 20 jul. / 2. December 1878 greg. In Tartu , Governorate of Livonia) was a Baltic German painter and graphic artist.
Life
August Matthias Hagen was born in Vījciems (German Wiezemhof ), 20 kilometers south of the town of Valka ( Walk ), in Livonia . His father was a tenant of a mill. Due to an accident in childhood, Hagen was blind in one eye. He first attended the district school in Valka. From 1810 he was a painter's journeyman in Tartu ( Dorpat ). In 1811 he began in the graphic studio of the German artist Karl August Senff , who taught at the University of Tartu ( Imperial University of Dorpat ) as a drawing teacher and engraver .
In 1820 Hagen went to Germany to develop his artistic skills. From the Baltic States he took the ship to Lübeck . He then traveled on foot via Mecklenburg and Brandenburg to Berlin , Dresden , Prague , Vienna and Passau . Later he visited Tyrol , Switzerland and Rome on extensive hikes .
In 1824 Hagen returned to Livonia. From 1826 he worked as a drawing teacher at the boys 'grammar school in Tartu, and from 1829 to 1832 also at the girls' grammar school. His students included Friedrich Sigismund Stern , Woldemar Friedrich Krüger and Hermann Eduard Hartmann .
In 1837 the Academy of Arts in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg appointed him a freelance artist. In 1838 Hagen succeeded Karl August Senff at the drawing school of the University of Tartu. Hagen held the office until 1851 before he retired from official teaching because of his poor eyesight.

August Matthias Hagen mainly worked on city and landscape views in sepia , aquatint and mixed media . Motifs from the Alps and the work of Caspar David Friedrich had a great influence on him. In Hagen's work, the influences of the ideal classicist landscape are blurred with romanticism .
The best known work of August Matthias Hagens are the six aquatint views of university buildings in Tartu. They were published on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reopening of the university in 1827/28.
In 1832 Hagen produced various views from Livonia. They represent Karksi ( Karkus ), Keila-Joa ( Castle Fall ) and Tartu and its surroundings. In 1835/36 Hagen worked on the depictions of some Finnish islands.
Private life
August Matthias Hagen is the father of the Baltic German painter Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz (1824–1902).
