Karl August Senff
Karl August Senff (* 12. March 1770 in Kreypau , today Saxony-Anhalt , † January 2 . Jul / 14. January 1838 greg. In Tartu , today Estonia ) was a painter, graphic artist and engraver .
Life
Karl August Senff was born near Merseburg as the son of the Protestant theologian Karl Friedrich Senf (1739-1814). Actually, he should have studied medicine . However, Senff initially went to Leipzig to study art with Adam Friedrich Oeser from 1788 to 1793 . From 1795 he learned from Christian Leberecht Vogel , who was a professor at the Art Academy in Dresden . Until 1802 Senff lived as a private student and freelance artist.
From 1803 Senff was the head of the drawing school and copper engraver at the reopened university in Tartu ( Dorpat ) in Livonia . In 1818 he received the title of associate professor .
The painter Adolf Senff was a brother.

The artistic focus of Karl August Senff was on copperplate engravings, pastel painting and graphic art. For study purposes, Senff wrote seven sample books with a total of 69 copperplate engravings and aquatint sheets. His textbook Geometric Drawing from 1828, which contains fifty picture panels, also became famous. Senff created numerous portraits and landscapes. In addition, he put u. a. Engravings of nineteen buildings of the University of Tartu in front.
Karl August Senff was the teacher of numerous well - known Baltic German artists, including Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell , August Philipp Klara , August Matthias Hagen , August Georg Wilhelm Pezold , Woldemar Friedrich Krüger and Friedrich Sigismund Stern .
