Johann Philipp Gustav Ewers (born June 23, jul. / 4. July  1781 greg. In Amelunxen , † November 8 jul. / 20th November  1830 greg. In Tartu , Governorate of Livonia ) was a German historian, state teachers , university lecturers and Rector of the Imperial University of Dorpat (1818–1830).

Life

The son of a farmer was first taught by the village pastor Schnorr and then attended the monastery school in Holzminden . Ewers studied theology and history in Göttingen .

In 1803 he became tutor to the Livonian district administrator Otto Magnus von Richter . So he came to the Baltic provinces , where he lived from then on until his death. His work as a teacher left him with a lot of time for research. His book Vom Ursprung des Russischen Staats [The Origin of the Russian State] , which was published in 1808 and was based on a comprehensive analysis of the sources, made him famous. Thereupon he was appointed a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1809 and in 1810 professor of geography, statistics and history at the University of Dorpat. From 1816 he was a professor of general history, geography and history. In 1818 the co-professors elected him rector; he was re-elected twelve times in this office. From 1826 he was professor of positive constitutional and international law. Ewert was an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Moscow University . Also from 1826 he was President of the Censorship Commission and finally in 1827 became the Imperial Russian Real Council of State.

family

Gustav von Ewers married Dorothea von Maydell (1790–1864) in 1811 . The marriage resulted in six children. Including the Russian statesman and diplomat Otto von Ewers (1812–1873).
