Friedrich Sigismund Stern

Friedrich Sigismund Stern (born August 22 . Jul / 3. September  1812 greg. In Kuigatsi , Livonia , † May 10 jul. / 22. May  1889 greg. In Riga ) was a Baltic German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Friedrich Sigismund Stern was born on the Livonian Gut Kuigatsi (German Kuikatz ) north of Valga ( Walk ). He attended high school in Tartu ( Dorpat ). In Tartu he then studied art with Karl August Senff (1770–1838).

In 1838 the Academy of Arts in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg appointed him a freelance artist. In Tartu he was also employed as a lithographer in Georg Friedrich Schlater's (1804–1870) printing works.

From 1841 until his death, Stern taught drawing and calligraphy at the aristocratic district school in Kuressaare ( Arensburg ), and from 1865 also at the local Progymnasium . In 1845 he made trips to Italy and Switzerland .

Stern is buried today in the cemetery of Kudjape ( Kudjapäh ) on the island of Saaremaa ( Ösel ).

Friedrich Sigismund Stern was best known for his album Oeselscher Bauerntrachten . It was published between 1856 and 1871 (reprinted in 1914). In his lithographs, Stern depicts the folkloric clothing of the parishes on the island with great detail . In addition, he stood out with paintings and drawings of the Baltic landscape. Stern's series of pictures about Livonia (1833 and 1838) and the architectural monuments of Saaremaa achieved a high level of awareness. He was influenced by classicism .
