Schlater was the son of the wheelwright Georg Friedrich Schlater and his wife Eva Rosina (née Rimler). He learned to paint in a room and came to Riga at a young age. In the last years of his life (1855 to 1870) he increasingly occupied himself with photography. In 1857 he sold his lithographic establishment to Louis Höflinger.

It says about the activities of the German pioneers of photography in Dorpat and Reval :

"[...] olulisematest varastest fotograafidest olgu nimetatud AM Hagen, G. Fr. Schlater, L. Höflinger, C. Schulz, Ch. Borchardt, H. Ellrich, GA Dietz yes Th. John. Kõik nad olid saksa soost mehed, kes seda uut kunsti siinmail edendama hakkasid, sageli tehes seda oma põhitöö kõrvalt - oli selleks siis maalikunst, litografeerimistegevus, töö muusikuna vuõi midagi. "

“[…] The most important early photographers were AM Hagen, G. Fr. Schlater, L. Höflinger, C. Schulz, chap. Borchardt, H. Ellrich, GA Dietz and Th. John. All were German men who started promoting this new art here and often did their main task - be it painting, lithography, work as a musician or something else. "
