Carl Johann Wilhelm Neumann , Latvian Vilhelms Neimanis , (born October 5, 1849 in Grevesmühlen , † March 6, 1919 in Riga ) was a German-Baltic architect and art historian .

Life

Wilhelm Neumann was born in Grevesmühlen, but his family moved to Kreutzburg (now Krustpils ) in the Livonia governorate when he was a child. At the age of 15 he was an apprentice in the Paul Max Bertschy engineering office building the Riga - Dünaburg railway line . He then studied at the Riga Polytechnic and from 1875 at the St. Petersburg Art Academy .

From 1873 Neumann worked as an architect in Dünaburg and became a city architect there in 1878. From 1887 he also published art historical writings. In Riga, where he moved in 1895, numerous striking buildings in the style of historicism were built under his leadership . a. the synagogue on Peitaustrasse (today Peitavas iela). He was also the planner of many mansions on the estates of the Baltic provinces .

From 1899 to 1901 he taught at the Polytechnic. In 1905 he became director of the art museum he designed . After 1906 Neumann concentrated on his art historical works.

He died in Riga on March 6, 1919.
