The Peitav Synagogue in Riga , the capital of Latvia , was built between 1903 and 1905. The synagogue on Peitaustrasse (today Peitavas iela) is a protected architectural monument .

With the attack on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the entire territory of Latvia came under the control of National Socialist Germany until July 8, 1941. This began the annihilation of almost all of the local Jewish population.

The Art Nouveau building was built according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Neumann . It is the only synagogue in Riga that was not destroyed during World War II. It was not set on fire like the other synagogues in Riga, as the neighboring buildings would have been endangered.
