John Ola Ulset made his international debut at the Junior World Championships 2000 in Hochfilzen , where he was 14th in the individual, 47th in the sprint and 25th in the pursuit. In the relay race he won the bronze medal with Kent Roger Guttormsen, Sveinung Strand and Geir Ole Steinslett behind the representatives from Germany and Russia. Since 2002 he also started in the European Cup . In his first race at the start of the 2002/03 season in Ål , he won first points as 17th of the individual. A year later , at the start of the season in Geilo, he finished fifth in a sprint and was among the top ten for the first time. In 2005 he was able to take second place in a relay race with Tor Halvor Bjørnstad , Håkon Andersen and Magne Thorleiv Rønning in Ridnaun . Then Ulset was able to make his debut in the World Cup in Pokljuka . In the sprint he was able to qualify as 50th for the pursuit race, in which he was able to improve to 34th place and thus missed winning World Cup points by only four places. It was also his best World Cup result of his career. At the start of the 2005/06 season , the Norwegian was back in the European Cup and had to admit defeat only Dmitri Yaroshenko in the second race of the season, a sprint . It was Ulset's best result in a single race in the racing series. In Osrblie he came again to two appearances in the World Cup in 2005 and was 45th in an individual and 87th in a sprint. Ulset had his final season in 2006/07 . With Egil Gjelland , Håkon Andersen and Anstein Mykland , he won his only European Cup race in Forni Avoltri in January 2007 with a relay competition. The military World Ski Championships 2007 in Kurgjärve and Haanja , where he finished 15th in the sprint, ended his career .
In addition to biathlon races, Ulset also competed several times in cross-country skiing between 2002 and 2007, mostly at the level of the Continental Cup and FIL races. He did not achieve any noteworthy results. The highlights were the 2005 Military World Ski Championships in Predeal , where he finished sixth in the 15-kilometer race. The end of his career was the 2007 Military World Ski Championships, when Ulset was 33rd in the 15-kilometer freestyle.
