Egil Gjelland (born November 12, 1973 in Voss ) is a former Norwegian biathlete .

life and career

The extremely safe relay runner Gjelland has been involved in the World Cup since 1995, and so far with relatively good success. His best performance so far is that of the 2000/2001 season with a seventh place. Good individual results can always be expected from him, but outstanding placements remained in short supply until recently.

In his most successful season in winter 2000/2001 Gjelland was able to run on the podium three times, but he celebrated his first victory on December 17, 2004 in the pursuit of Östersund. He completed a great career with the climax of the Olympic victory in the biathlon relay in 2002. Together with Ole Einar Bjørndalen , Halvard Hanevold and Frode Andresen , he won this race with ease, but many people think that Gjelland is the decisive factor in the relay was. In 2005 Gjelland won relay gold at the World Cup. In the 2006/2007 season he started in the European Cup and has consistently placed around 10th place.

After the end of the 2009/2010 season, Gjelland took over the post of head coach for the Norwegian biathletes and thus succeeded Knut Tore Berland . Before that, he had already trained the second team since the end of his active time. From 2014 to 2016 he was in charge of the Norwegian men's national team. After a two-year break, Gjelland took over the Czech biathletes as a trainer in 2018.

Gjelland is married to the biathlete Ann-Elen Skjelbreid , the sister of Liv Grete Poirée . He has been the father of a daughter since October 2004.
