Daniel Böhm (born June 16, 1986 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld ) is a former German biathlete . His greatest successes are the 2015 world championship title with the men's relay and the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the same discipline.

Career

Daniel Böhm, who lives in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, starts for SC Buntenbock . He has been competing in international competitions since 2005 and has achieved considerable success from the start. In addition to a sixth place in the individual, Böhm won the relay at the Junior World Championships in 2006. He was even more successful in 2007 when, in addition to relay gold (with Simon Schempp , Sebastian Berthold and Christoph Stephan ), he won two silver medals in sprint and pursuit and also achieved an excellent result in fourth place. His first victory in a European Cup race he achieved on March 8, 2008 in Cesana , Italy , where he won the sprint.

The 2008/09 season began quite successfully for Böhm in the IBU Cup , at the turn of the year he was second overall. The good performance earned him a nomination for the sprint race in Oberhof in the Biathlon World Cup . Böhm was able to convince and ran into 29th place with a shooting error and thus also scored his first World Cup points in the same season . At the European Championships in 2009 he won gold in the pursuit and silver in the relay. After the European Championship, Böhm was nominated again for the World Cup and surprisingly ran into second place in the Vancouver singles , behind the equally surprising winner Vincent Jay . Two days later he was 20th in the sprint. The next day he came to his first assignment in a German relay. Together with Schempp, Arnd Peiffer and Michael Rösch , he formed the youngest season ever to have started in the World Cup for Germany and came third with it. It was not considered for the 2010 Olympic Games and only contested three races in the Olympic winter at the home World Cups in Oberhof and Ruhpolding and the races at the end of the season at Holmenkollen and Khanty-Mansiysk in the highest racing series. At the 2010 European Biathlon Championships in Otepää , Daniel Böhm became European sprint champion for the first time. In the 2010/2011 World Cup winter , after Simon Schempp's retirement, Böhm made his first World Cup appearance in Ruhpolding and achieved good results in the sprint and pursuit with twelfth and fifteenth place. The start in Antholz brought him his first victory on January 23, 2011 in the relay together with Christoph Stephan, Arnd Peiffer and Michael Greis , at the next World Cup station in Presque Isle he was again on the top as the final runner of the mixed relay Podium. He achieved his second best individual result to date in the opening race of the next station in Fort Kent , when he came in fifth in the sprint after an error-free shooting performance. At the 2012 European Biathlon Championships in Osrblie , Böhm and Matthias Bischl , Johannes Kühn and Erik Lesser again won the relay race title as well as the individual title and bronze title in the pursuit race. With five titles and a total of seven medals, Böhm is until today (as of 2015) the most successful male German participant in the European Biathlon Championships .

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he won the silver medal in the biathlon relay. For this they were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Joachim Gauck on May 8, 2014 . In March 2015, Böhm became world champion with the relay for the first time. On December 11, 2016, Böhm announced that he would end his career at the end of the year.

After his resignation, Daniel Böhm left the federal police service and worked in the private sector. In addition, he was elected athletes' representative in the Technical Committee of the International Biathlon Union in 2018 . He gave up both positions in January 2020 when he was appointed permanent sports manager at the IBU.
