Julien Robert (born December 11, 1974 in Grenoble , France ) is a former French biathlete .

Robert, who was married to the French biathlete Florence Baverel-Robert , currently lives in Les Hôpitaux-Neufs (France) and trains at SC Douane / Montbenoit. His successes include four medals with the French relay at World Championships and Winter Olympic Games.

Career

Robert, who has been biathlon since 1994, made his first appearance in the Biathlon World Cup in the 1995/96 season. Although he had started seven races by the end of the season, his best result was only a 41st place in Pokljuka. It wasn't until almost a year later that Robert came to his next outings in the World Cup, his best result this season was 30th place in the sprint at the 1997 Biathlon World Championships in Osrblie. In the following season 1997/98 Robert reached without exception placements outside the points, even at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano he could not convince with the 40th place in the individual and a disappointing 67th place in the sprint. Probably as a consequence of these bad races, he was not used in the French relay. The 1998/99 season was somewhat more successful for Robert, where he scored World Cup points for the first time with 20th place in the Osrblie sprint and with 16th place in the individual race of the 1999 World Championships, he delivered the best race of his career up to that point.

With the 1999/00 season, Robert improved compared to previous years. At the very first World Cup station in Hochfilzen he finished 19th in the individual, in the subsequent pursuit he was able to fight his way up to 7th place thanks to an error-free shooting and thus achieved the first top 10 position of his career. With places 12 and 19 in Pokljuka, he achieved further good results. However, Robert was not yet consistent enough to regularly run into the points, so positions in the top 20 alternated with positions beyond 40th place. This continued into the 2000/01 season. However, Robert was surprised at the World Cup in Soldier Hollow in February 2001, when he achieved the first and only podium finish of his career with 3rd place in the individual and further top 10 results with 8th place in the sprint and 9th in the pursuit. He was finally able to finish the season as 34th of the overall World Cup. Robert achieved one of his greatest successes this season when he and Gilles Marguet , Vincent Defrasne and Raphaël Poirée won the gold medal in the relay race at the 2001 World Championships in Pokljuka. Robert, who has been used repeatedly in French relays since 1997, was able to contribute to this success with faultless shooting. In the following season 2001/02 Robert could not repeat the performances of the previous season. With only one top 20 placement, 14th place in the pursuit in Ruhpolding, he achieved his worst result to date with 56th place in the overall World Cup. The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City were initially unsuccessful, the best result was 35th place in the sprint. With the French relay, however, Robert won the bronze medal.

The 2002/03 season became the Frenchman's best season. In a total of 15 out of 23 races, Robert was able to place himself among the 30 best athletes and thus achieve World Cup points. At the beginning of 2003, Robert achieved several top 10 placements. In the mass start in Oberhof he finished 4th, in the pursuit of Ruhpolding he was able to fight his way up to 8th place after a 23rd place in the sprint, in the mass start in Antholz he finished 6th. In the overall World Cup, Robert finished 20th at the end of this season . Place and was thus third best French. Robert was able to show the level of the previous season at the beginning of the 2003/04 season. With two fifth places in the individual and the pursuit of Osrblie, he was 11th in the overall World Cup at the end of 2003. Due to weaker results in the new year, the best were 16th twice in Antholz and Fort Kent, he was noticed until the end of the season Rank 26 back. As in two major events before, Robert was also successful with the French relay at the 2004 World Championships in Oberhof , this time winning the bronze medal. The 2004/05 season was similar to the previous one. Robert's best results were two eleventh places in San Sicario and Khanty-Mansiysk, in the end he finished 29th in the overall World Cup.

The 2005/06 Olympic season began with a furious race to catch up for Robert. After finishing 60th in the Östersund sprint and thus barely qualifying for the pursuit as the very last athlete, he made up 50 places with an error-free shooting in the pursuit race and finished in 10th place after some respectable performances in the run-up to the Winter Olympics Robert showed a consistently good performance for the first time in a major event in Turin . His best placement was 6th place in the individual race, with 18th place in the sprint, 10th in the pursuit and 16th in the mass start, he achieved four top 20 results in four races. In addition, as in 2002, he won the bronze medal with the French relay. With 24th place, he was able to improve in the overall World Cup for the first time in three years. After an overall disappointing 2006/07 season, Julien Robert announced his resignation. However, he was then changed and was back in the 2007/08 season.

Until 2018, Robert and Jean-Paul Giachino were the head coach of the French biathlon women’s national team. Since then they have held these functions in the IBU Cup team.
