Jürgen Wirth (born June 20, 1965 in Großbreitenbach ) is a former German biathlete .

Jürgen Wirth started for the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof . In the second half of the 1980s he was one of the best East German biathletes. At first he was a successful junior athlete. In 1983 he won silver in the individual behind André Sehmisch and gold with Sehmisch and Maik Dietz in the relay competition of the Junior World Championships in Antholz . In the biathlon world cup , Wirth often achieved good results from 1984 onwards, including a fourth place in the Ruhpolding sprint in 1987 and a fifth place in the individual in Oberhof in 1985 . He took part in major international events several times. At the Biathlon World Championships in 1985 he was 55th in the sprint, in 1986 in Oslo 20th in the sprint and 18th in the individual. In the relay he won the silver medal behind the Soviet relay as a starting runner together with Frank-Peter Roetsch , Matthias Jacob and André Sehmisch. The 1987 Biathlon World Championships in Lake Placid brought, in addition to a 25th place in the individual, the win of the world title with the relay of the GDR in the occupation of the previous year before the relay of the USSR and the Federal Republic. The highlight of Wirth's career was his participation in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . With Roetsch, Jacob and Sehmisch he finished fifth in the relay race, in the individual he was 16th. National Wirth celebrated notable successes, especially in the sprint. In 1986 he was third in the GDR championships, in 1987 he was only defeated by Frank-Peter Roetsch, in 1988 he won the title. In the relay competitions in 1985 he won bronze with the first season of Vorwärts Oberhof, in 1986 he was runner-up, in 1987 he won the title, in 1988 he was runner-up again. Wirth ended his career after the Olympic Games.

In 1986 Jürgen Wirth was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Doping in the GDR

According to his testimony, Wirth was instructed by his trainer Frank Ullrich to take doping substances as part of the state-decreed doping in GDR competitive sport, the intake was also checked by Ullrich and Wilfried Bock .
